How to Press DTF Transfers: Temperature, Time & Pressure Guide
A perfect DTF print starts long before the shirt leaves your shop — it starts at the press. The good news: DTF transfers are one of the most forgiving heat-applied products out there. Follow the settings below and you'll get vivid color, clean edges and prints that survive 50+ washes.
The settings that matter
| Fabric | Temperature | Pressure | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard (cotton, poly, blends) | 275°F (135°C) | 60–80 PSI / firm | 8–10 seconds |
| Heat-sensitive (thin poly, nylon) | 220–240°F (105–115°C) | 60–80 PSI / firm | 15 seconds |
All Buffalo Transfers prints are hot peel — you can remove the film immediately after pressing, which keeps production moving fast.
Step-by-step application
- Pre-press the garment for 3–5 seconds. This removes moisture and wrinkles — the #1 cause of patchy adhesion.
- Position the transfer print-side down. A ruler or laser guide helps with repeat jobs.
- Press at 275°F with firm pressure for 8–10 seconds. Even pressure matters more than extra time — check that your platen closes evenly corner to corner.
- Peel hot. Lift one corner and pull smoothly across the design in one motion.
- Finish with a 5-second re-press using parchment or a Teflon sheet. This locks the ink into the fibers and gives a softer, matte finish.
Common mistakes (and quick fixes)
- Design cracks after washing — pressure was too light, or the re-press was skipped. Increase to firm pressure and always re-press.
- Edges lift on the first day — the garment was pressed cold or damp. Never skip the pre-press.
- Shiny rectangle around the print — heat platen touched bare fabric too long. Use a cover sheet and drop press time to 8 seconds.
- Colors look dull — temperature too low. Verify your press with an infrared thermometer; many presses run 10–20°F below the dial.
